Mothers union Mushroom Project at Ndirande starts harvesting… and is blessed at a formal launch event
On 20 Oct 2009 Members of Ndirande Mothers Union were joined by Senior MU leaders, MU Diocesan Co-ordinator Yasinta Mtambo, Diocesan Secretary Godfrey Mgodi and Archdeacon/Parish Priest Father justice Msini in a short ceremony to formally launch their Mushroom project, and bless the shed used for cultivation.
This initiative in Ndirande builds on experience gained from a smaller scale scheme funded in 2004 by partners in the USA. The current project will act as a pilot for a total grant of MK700,000 received from Mothers union HQ Mary Sumner House, to develop in other parishes. Ndirande was allocated 180,000 to fund the new shed, watering cans and 4 large water butts. The mushroom seeds and special plastic bags come from Bvumbwe Agricultural research centre. Mushrooms are grown in a medium of chopped maize stalks. They also need special substances for pesticide/sterilisation
