History of the Order of the
Daughters of the King - Southern
Malawi Diocese

Established in 1885, the Order of the Daughters of the King is a lay order for women of the Anglican/Episcopal Church. There are chapters in various Anglican churches around the world.

Members undertake a rule of life, incorporating prayer and service, with the goal of spreading Christ's kingdom, especially among women and girls, and strengthening the spiritual life of the parish.

Since the formation of the Diocese of Southern Malawi in the year 2002, four chapters of the Order have been formed in the following parishes, Soche, Bangwe, Chilomoni and Ndirande.

The first chapter of the Order of Daughters of the King was formed in 2004 at Soche Parish. Josie Tengatenga a daughter since 1984 helped set up the group. Bishop James installed the 18 members on 29th  August 2004 at Soche Parish and instituted  the chapter of St. Anne.

The following are the names of the first Daughters of the King committee: Nancy Namachapa-Chairperson, Rose Mandala-Vice Chairperson, Alice Mpepeluka-Secretary, Lisungu Kasiya-Treasurer, Dorothy Khumbanyiwa, Angela Chindandali and Mrs. Medi the committee members.

In the picture above we have St. Anne Chapter (Soche Parish) members in blue skirts and white tops. Ladies in dresses and white tops are the George’s Parish-Zomba Daughters in the Diocese of Upper Shire. Alice Mtenje led the group from Zomba.

A chapter was established at Ndirande Parish comprising of 18 Daughters in 2005. In the picture above the Ndirande Daughters are in White T/Shirts and blue and black chitenje. In skirts and white blouses are the Soche Daughters who joined the newly installed daughters for fellowship and moral support.

At Bangwe Parish there are four Daughters. Last year (2006) in August eight new members were installed at Chilomoni Parish. St. Anne’s from Soche came to witness the installation. We now have a total of four chapters in the Diocese of Southern Malawi. The numbers continue to grow and the total number of Daughters in the Diocese of Southern Malawi is now 90 members.

In 2006 the National Conference was held in the Diocese of Southern Malawi. The venue was Fresh Water Conference Centre and was held from 29th September, to 2nd October. During the conference the National Committee was elected and Alice Mtenje from Diocese of Upper Shire is the current Chairperson and her vice chair is Agnes Salaka from the Diocese of Southern Malawi.
