About our Mission Partnership with
Calvary Episcopal Church: Golden, Colorado

Calvary Church has been the custodian of small donations (too small to be sent individually) from former seminary classmates and friends of the bishop since 2000.

These funds have provided invaluable budget support for the Diocese of Southern Malawi. People have sent in $20 or more in monthly donations to this account on a regular basis, which, at the request of the bishop, is sent to the diocese.

In 2004 Calvary Church members came on mission trip, during which they helped our community based orphan care project at Ndirande with food, clothing, basic medicine and toys and also helped build a mushroom growing shed.

And, they helped establish a mechanics training programme for orphans in the parish.

The current project they are working on is construction at Mlambe II Primary School in Malawi Parish.

School library under construction.

They are building a school library and staff room (photo above) and donated a consignment of reading books for the pupils and have ordered prescribed textbooks for the school. Next year they will be working on a different project in the same school.

The school needs more pit latrines and houses for teachers..

The idea is to do one school at a time and meet as much of its needs as possible before moving to the next. Calvary Church has also been considering the possibility of establishing a charity organisation to help with their fundraising.

The next mission trip will be in May 2007.

Background Information

The link with Calvary Episcopal Church in Golden, Colorado, USA, is a continuation of the relationship that Fr. John Wengrovius has with Southern Malawi having been a missionary seminary professor there in the 1980s.

The continued relationship between Bishop James Tengatenga with him led to this continuation and the formalization of the relationship with the parish.

The bishop has visited the parish several times over the years. The parish has been our bank in the USA. Friends and supporters of Bishop James ministry all over the USA have sent their small donations to Calvary who banked it for us and as called in by the Bishop would make bank transfers to the Diocese of Southern Malawi.

The parish has a committee that works on the relationship.

In 2005 a group of 10 visited the diocese and helped build a mushroom shed for the orphan care support at Ndirande Parish in Blantyre, established a motor vehicle mechanics training programme for out of school youth and bought food supplies and clothing for the orphans in the Community based care project at Ndirande. They also helped pay secondary school fees for one orphan in each of the four archdeaconries of the diocese.

In the Spring of 2006 they were in the diocese again but this time building a primary school library at Mlambe II Primary School in Malawi Parish. They also brought some library book for the school.

They helped teach in the school both in regular classes and some nutrition classes. They are continuing with the mechanics course and feel led to focus on primary schools as the arena of their helping us in the mission of God.
